What do you need to get out of having to serve jury duty?

You need jury duty exemptions.

Many people do not like the idea of having to serve on a jury because it poses an inconvenience to their daily lives.

The fact of the matter is though, there are only a handful of legitimate excuses that will work to get someone excused from having to serve.

This means that anyone who needs to get out of jury duty needs to take a close look at the list of viable excuses before attempting to actually get excused from duty.

Even though there are not many viable excuses for jury duty exemptions, there are a few to work with.

If you are over the age of 70, all you need to do is provide proof of your age, and you are free to go.

This is the simplest jury duty exemption, though it is not applicable for many of the people that receive a jury duty summons.

If you are responsible for the care of young children or elderly people, it is likely that you will be able to get out of jury duty because you are needed elsewhere and there are others that can take your place on the jury.

This however, is one of the exemptions that may require further explanation and you will need to be present on the day of your selection to explain your situation to be excused from duty.

It is possible that you will be able to make a few phone calls to prove your situation and not have to show up for selection.

If you serve as a volunteer firefighter or member of an ambulance crew, you will be automatically excused from jury duty because the civic duty you are already serving is more noble and important than serving on a jury.

Proving that you serve this duty is fairly easy if you have documentation you can include with the jury duty questionnaire.

The same is true for military personnel.

If you are in a position at work that will cause harm to the business during your absence you have a higher chance of being able to get out of serving.

Positions such as doctors, nurses, lawyers, and business owners will have an easier time than others, for the simple fact that employers are required to allow you to serve your jury duty without penalty.

If for some reason you are physically unable to make it to the courthouse to serve, you also do not have to worry about having to serve.

This means you do not have a car or access to public transportation for any number of reasons, but it will also be extended to apply to certain disabilities as well. This is particularly true in very rural communities that lack public transportation.

TAKE IT SERIOUSLY

Most of these situations will require that you physically show up in the courtroom on the day of your assignment to further explain why you cannot serve. You will still need to report in order to be able to better provide the explanation as to why you need jury duty exemptions.

It is important that you do not ignore your summons because of the penalties associated with it, and the sooner you respond to the summons with your questionnaire, the better off you are.
