The 1860 presidential election issues led to the bloodiest period in U.S. history and parallels can be drawn to the United States of today. Abraham Lincoln emerged from humble roots as a rural boy to become president.

When Abraham Lincoln rose to power, he did so at a time when the southern states and those in the north were as far apart ideologically as at any other point in history. Lincoln sought to correct the injustice of slavery and he questioned the conventional approach to economic growth, particularly in the southern states.

The Republican party under Lincoln would face the 1860 presidential election issues without the support of a single southern state, and Lincoln's victory led to the secession of states in the south and eventually, the Civil War.

In recent years, we can see a similar fractioning of the nation down party lines that paints two completely separate visions for the direction of the United States.

No president in U.S. history could divide the nation as much as former president George W. Bush, and the legitimacy of his presidency will remain a point of contention for years to come.

His first election saw support for the Republicans under Bush rested mainly in the interior of the country, traditionally conservative and rural by nature, whereas more liberal-minded states in the north east and the west coast favored the Democrats under Al Gore.

It took a Supreme Court decision to rule on the Republican victory in Florida after that election leading to widespread anger across the country. At that time, the scope of the divide between Republican and Democrats became clear.

Lincoln seems to epitomize the concept of freedom and liberty that the American people cherish, and he represents the struggle for justice that paved the way for equal rights in the United States. This same struggle continues today. Most importantly, however, Lincoln represents a romantic era when perseverance could lead to right prevailing over wrong.

This is a concept that has been stolen from the American people. For his two terms, former president George W. Bush trampled upon the rights of U.S. citizens in favor of the banking mafia. He alienated allies from across the globe, and he did so with what many would argue was a stolen mandate to govern.

THE POTENTIAL FOR A NEW ERA

When Barack Obama was elected as the 44th president of the United States in the 2008 election, many saw a redemptive move towards real progress for hope and change.

Though Obama still came to power behind great swaths of donated money from across the board, there was a true sense of optimism that his was a grassroots election that represented the will of the American people.

There is much to be done for Obama to live up to, the hopes and expectations that follow him, but the most important thing he can do is once again bring the American people together with a collective view for the future.

The turmoil that befell the country with the 1860 presidential election issues that tore families and the country apart is unlikely to be replicated in our present day, but unless Obama can bring about true change, a more constant state of turmoil is sure to follow the American people. Since Obama is a part of the banking mafia, this battle will go much deeper as an active peaceful revolution.
